Greek Language Courses in Cyprus

Language Function: Students should be able to communicate in Greek with a high degree of fluency and spontaneity, allowing interaction with native speakers to develop naturally and without significant effort on either side. They are expected to understand the central ideas of texts and discussions dealing with both concrete and abstract subjects, including more specialised or technical matters connected with their own area of study or work. They should also be able to express themselves clearly and in sufficient detail on a broad range of topics, present and justify their opinions, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different possibilities.

At this level, learners should also be able to manage common everyday transactions with greater confidence, adaptability, and independence. They should respond effectively not only in familiar situations but also when difficulties occur, circumstances change unexpectedly, or communication becomes less predictable than usual.

In addition, students are expected to use language and behaviour that are appropriate to the social context. This includes choosing suitable polite forms, adjusting the level of formality or familiarity, and understanding non-verbal conventions such as gestures, interpersonal distance, and physical contact. Learners should also have a sound knowledge of important aspects of contemporary Greek/Cyprus culture, including everyday life, social practices, living conditions, and widely shared values. They should recognise cultural differences, understand relevant customs and traditions, and be aware that such differences may occasionally lead to misunderstandings. Equally important is the ability to identify significant sociocultural contrasts between their own society and the attitudes, expectations, and ways of thinking commonly associated with native Greek speakers.
